HOW I'M SURVIVING THIS PANDEMIC

Image
With 16% of the population, those 65 and older account for 80% of all COVID-19 deaths .  I wonder why there is so much difference, but here is a map showing the percentage of all country deaths occurring in assisted living communities: I live in one of these long-term centers, and I can point to two minor-miracles: So far, 15 Craigside has had no coronavirus cases.  No cases, no deaths.  At one time I was maybe a too pronounced critic of life here, but long ago came to a conclusion that, with the available funds and test kits, the administration was doing everything possible they could to protect us.  So I'm now mostly thankful as to how lucky we have been ( the pandemic is still around us ), for those asymptomatic staff cases of people working here has to be an unknown factor they can do nothing about.  Helps if everyone can get tested at least once/week, but who has that kind of budget, and only the White House, professional sport and college footba...

ABOUT OUR LIAR-IN-CHIEF

Image
Can you believe it?  The President of the USA lies...all the time.  Even his supporters know so, but apparently accept it as okay, for he is their liar.  Says something about their character, too.  And on this matter, you will be shocked to later learn how many of us lie, too. Never thought about it before, but there are various kinds of liars.   Here is one  list: Pathological:  read that article for what this is, but of course, Trump qualifies in this category. Intentional:  this one has to do with doing it for fun.  Nah, this is not him. Manipulative:  similar to pathological, but more specifically, they lie to get what they want, and they do whatever is necessary to reach an end goal.  Yup, that's Donald. Protective:  while dangerous, sometimes perceived as noble, as in a white lie to shield someone from a terrible truth.  Nope, not our president. Avoidant:  this group dances around the truth and avoid anything th...

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Image
My blog postings are sometimes aimed to advocate something, or provide a different look at a situation.  About the world population, I somewhat cheekily said in The Huffington Post ( and this was in 2011, when the population was about to reach 7 billion ):      THE WORLD POPULATION IN 2050 COULD WELL BE 7 BILLION Here, the latest from Our World in Data: That is, in the year 2100, when the annual growth rate drops to 0.1%, the world population will be 10.9 billion.  We really can't support this number of people at any lifestyle close to the USA.  My reasoning was that we had to take population control more seriously, for the sake of humanity in the future.  So again, no one listens to me. Some think we are going to live on Mars.  I have suggested the open ocean as a parallel next frontier.  Thus the Blue Revolution .  We only need $150 billion to build an ocean city to host the world expo in 2050.  For background: A report from the ...

WHY ARE WE HERE?

Image
I will continue to have Wednesday science, today on Why are we here? , and tomorrow delve into  Where are we Going?  Sunday will usually be a time for religion, so a spiritual version of Why , which on September 28 will describe the more sacred Where . We are here by an incredible fluke.  The odds on you being here to read this posting fall into the realm of a miracle.  But science has a best guess: For now, accept that there was something called the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago. Around 12 billion years ago, our Milky Way galaxy of 200 billion stars formed.  It was as recently as 1924 when Edwin Hubble announced our galaxy was not the Universe .   In time astrophysicists came to a realization that there are now 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe.  But observations show that we can only see as far out to 46 billion light-years.   However, the sphere representing our Universe is 7 trillion light-years across, or 250 times l...
